Authorised Persons Association (APA) Annual Conference 2025
Supporting Compliance Professionals
Overview
In August 2025, Frontline Mental Health (FMH) was invited to deliver a customised workplace presentation for the Authorised Persons Association (APA) at their annual conference. The session, The Hidden Cost of Compliance, explored the unique mental health challenges faced by compliance and enforcement professionals across the association.
This built on a presentation delivered by FMH at the 2024 APA annual conference, strengthening our ongoing partnership with the association and continuing the important conversations from our previous conversations with association members.
Audience
Authorised Officers, compliance teams and enforcement staff from across South Australia. These professionals share many of the same stressors as local council teams, including public facing conflict, decision fatigue and the emotional demands of their roles.
Key Themes Covered
- The hidden impacts of stress including the physiological toll (such as headaches, sleep disruption and muscle tension), the psychological effects (including anxiety, decision fatigue and burnout), and the social consequences (strained relationships, withdrawal or maladaptive coping).
- Common challenges faced daily such as hyper vigilance when dealing with the public, the mental drain of making difficult decisions under pressure, and the emotional exhaustion that comes with enforcement roles.
- Why standard advice like “just switch off” or “take a break” is often unrealistic in compliance work and how this gap requires practical, role specific strategies.
- Practical tools for immediate use, including 4-7-8 breathing and other evidence based techniques that can be applied in real world situations without disrupting core duties.
- Tailored, culturally relevant strategies that reflect the realities of compliance professionals, ensuring training is meaningful, applicable and respectful of their unique workplace culture.
Our Approach
- Fully customisable programs: Presentation designed in consultation with APA leaders and members to ensure it reflected the day-to-day realities of their roles. Content was adjusted to the language, culture and pressures of enforcement work, making the training highly relevant and specific.
- Engaging, lived experience: Delivered by facilitators with backgrounds in frontline and service roles, the sessions drew on real-world examples that participants could relate to immediately. This approach created credibility and fostered trust among attendees.
- Practical tools, not theory: Every strategy presented was designed to be simple, actionable and directly applicable in high pressure workplace contexts. Techniques were demonstrated throughout the session and participants practiced applying them to scenarios they encounter on the job.
- Alignment with organisational goals: The presentation supported APA’s commitment to workforce wellbeing and professional development. It showed how proactive mental health support can improve resilience, reduce burnout and strengthen overall team performance.
Outcome
The 2025 session built on the foundation established in 2024, highlighting FMH’s commitment to a long term partnership with APA. Together we have continued to address the evolving mental health needs of compliance professionals. By combining lived experience with practical, evidence based strategies, FMH created a safe, engaging environment where participants could reflect, connect and leave with practical tools they could use every day in their workplace.
Takeaway
FMH partners with organisations and councils to deliver authentic, tailored mental health training. Our ongoing collaboration with APA demonstrates how we build long-term partnerships that evolve over time and adapt to changing workforce needs. This case study illustrates our ability to customise programs to different industries while staying true to our core commitment: training that is practical, engaging, and immediately relevant to the people in the room.
