Frontline Mental Health are collaborating with the Boulder Crest Foundation to bring their life changing programs to Australia.

Struggle Well is a prevention focused program based on the science of Post Traumatic Growth. By partnering with first responder agencies and military units, this program is fundamentally changing the culture from the inside out.

What is Struggle Well?

Struggle Well is a comprehensive approach that focuses on transformation of the military and first responder culture, rather than the implementation of another wellness program.

The program is guided by two objectives: normalising the struggles that are part of every service member and first responders life and democratising their ability to struggle well.

Struggle Well trains military units and first responder agencies so participants are able to transform struggle into strength and growth, and be of better service to themselves, their family, community and country.

Program Options

The 1 day program is focused on cultivating awareness of the Struggle Well philosophy. This option is best suited for executive teams, service members and first responders and their family members.

The 2 day program is ideal for leaders and senior management of military and first responder communities. This program builds on the awareness of the 1 day program by including an immersive case study.

The 5 day program is the flagship program and ideal for all ranks, peer support personnel and future leaders. The extended format allows participants to gain a deep understanding of the science behind the program and how to integrate the Struggle Well philosophy into your workplace culture.

Case Study: Tucson Police Department

In 2021, the Tucson Police Department (TPD) was facing a severe crisis. Amid the pandemic, civil unrest, severe staffing shortages and a surge in violence, the breaking point came when two employees took their own lives within two months. Despite having a robust Mental Health Support Team, a Behavioural Sciences Unit and a department psychologist, it became evident that these resources were not enough.

In response, TPD partnered with the Boulder Crest Foundation to implement an organisational change initiative — Struggle Well — focused on creating a culture of trust and supporting staff wellbeing.

FMH will partner with your unit, department, agency and leadership to enable them to reclaim their role as the guardian of their people's wellbeing. The objective of this partnership based effort is to transform the culture - from one where people are taught to "suck it up because that is what you signed up for" to one where professional and personal struggle is normalised and the ability to receive support is democratised.

The approach is comprehensive. Training saturates departments and units to reach a critical mass of team members and is institutionalised across the entire training spectrum.

The science of Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) suggests that it is during times of deep struggle people are likely to engage in reflection and introspection, and carefully consider what is truly valuable and significant in their lives. PTG describes the ways in which the struggle and introspection that follows traumatic events can often serve as a catalyst for growth and transformation.

PTG is both a process that people go through to make sense of their life post-trauma and an outcome that is experienced in five areas of life: New Possibilities, Deeper Relationships, Personal Strength, Appreciation for Life, and Spiritual-Existential Change.

Our Struggle Well training approach reawakens a sense of hope and possibility in participants and provides them with a path to a life worth living — one filled with passion, purpose, service, connection, and growth.
