The Phases of Posttraumatic Growth

The five phases of PTG represent the process we must undertake on the road to PTG, which includes grieving what we lost and rebuilding core beliefs.

The foundation of PTG - Trust and Connection

The five phases of PTG are grounded in an environment of trust and connection. When we have people in our lives who we trust, and who allow us to ask hard questions without judging us, we can begin the process of PTG and personal growth.

PTG Phase 1 - Education

The first phase of the PTG process is Education, which involves two parts. The first is learning about the normal and painful impacts struggle has on our lives. The second is learning about the possibilities to grow in the aftermath of struggle. This learning normalises what we experience, reduces the fear and shame that are an inevitable part of times of difficulty, and creates hope for the future.

PTG Phase 2 - Regulation

Through regulation practices we cultivate a sense of calm, clarity, and connectedness that gives us the space to reflect and to respond – rather than react – to what we are navigating. This space enables us to regain a sense of control in our lives, and the ability to make conscious choices about what will happen next.

PTG Phase 3 - Disclosure

With hope that comes from learning about PTG, and calm and clarity through regulation, we can begin to reflect upon and Disclose the stress, struggle, hardship, and trauma we experienced – and more importantly, the impact that it has had on us.

PTG Phase 4 - Story

By doing the hard work of Education, Regulation, and Disclosure, we can begin to pick up the pieces and build anew – building upon the story of our lives – and write a new chapter.

PTG Phase 5 - Service

By making sense of our experiences, we can build the courage to share our stories with others. This can enrich their lives and enable them to struggle well. Many of us realise that, because others have been there for us, it feels critical to give back and to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
